Meet K-9 Officer Juan Lopez and dog Wil
Wil came to the City of Lake Alfred without any cost to the taxpayers. The late Bob Williams, a local businessman bequeathed a Mercedes Benz to the department to raffle off so the department could get another dog. The department’s other dog retired in October 2009. The City of Lake Alfred purchased Wil in early 2012. Wil is now an 18-month old German Shepherd purchased from breeders specializing in raising puppies with skills to sniff out drugs and attack upon command. Officer Lopez, Wil’s handler, has had five years’ experience handling bloodhounds for the Florida Department of Corrections and 14 years total law enforcement experience with the past two being in Lake Alfred. The City of Lake Alfred is proud of our team. K-9 units conduct building searches, track and apprehend suspects, locate missing persons, and indicate the presence of certain illegal drugs. K-9s and their handlers successfully complete the training guidelines as established by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
