Happy 105th Birthday Ms. Lenore Gundy Costello

On Monday, December 6, 2021, the Lake Alfred City Commission officially wished Lenore Gundy Costello and very Happy 105th Birthday 🙂

WHEREAS, Lenore “Gundy” Costello was born November 12, 1916, to Harrison W. W. and
Nessie Alford VanGundia, one of 5 sisters, making this her 105th year; and

WHEREAS, she married George Costello (March 2, 1909 – June 14, 1997) in Sycamore, Ohio
on December 19, 1942, beginning a marriage that would see 54 anniversaries and many changes
in this world; and

WHEREAS, she attended Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio, and received her AB degrees
(Bachelor of Arts) in both Sociology and Biology; and

WHEREAS, since the age of thirteen she has been a devoted member of the United Methodist
Church, and has been a member of Beymer United Methodist Church of Winter Haven, Florida
for the past seventy-six (76) years; and

WHEREAS, in 1942 she moved to Lake Alfred, Florida with her husband and in 1945 became
involved with the Heart of Florida Girl Scouts. She spent 25 years as the Executive Director
growing the presence of the Girls Scouts in our area from 450 girls from six small towns, to over
9,000 girls within seven counties during her tenure; and

WHEREAS, she served for several years on the Board of Directors for the Lake Alfred Historical
Society and the Lake Alfred Friends of the Library; and

WHEREAS, her hobbies include reading, knitting, and cooking. She still likes to keep busy with
her knitting and has donated over 100 hats to the chemotherapy patients at the Winter Haven
Hospital; and

WHEREAS, these are her wise words of wisdom to share: “It is important for everyone to continue
to make new “young” friends.
