Today is the last “official” day of Hurricane Season.
This is a reminder that residents should have already removed their hurricane shutters and boards from windows to prevent fire hazards.
Keeping shutters up can create a fire hazard that has potentially deadly consequences.
1) All residential rooms are required to have two points of egress. If there is a fire, it is important to make sure you have a way to get out of your home.
2) A fire inside may not be seen if the windows are shuttered.
3) Shutters could delay entry by firefighter since they must follow a “vent, enter, search” protocol, which means they will enter room-by-room and search them to ensure everyone is out of the burning structure.
