The City of Lake Alfred celebrated its centennial (100 Years) in 2015. Several special events, presentations, videos and a song has been produced as part of the celebration. Check out the information and links below.
Time Capsule Ceremony
The time capsule ceremony and reception was held on June 29, 2015. Items were collected and preserved for future generations to discover. Representative from all aspects attended including current and past political leaders, businesses, civic groups, educational and religious organizations, other cities, and our family of citizens.
Heritage Trails is a video series on the history of Polk County, FL. Produced for the Polk History Center by PGTV. Several videos were produce about Lake Alfred and included in the Polk County series.
A Song for Lake Alfred
A Song was for written for and about Lake Alfred. The lyrics were written by Steve Franklin. The music was composed and produced by Paul and Cathy Butcher.
Rob Stevens, a local professional surveyor, presented a unique history of the City of Lake Alfred. He discussed events that opened the wilderness into Central Florida and the impacts to Lake Alfred including the first dirt road, Fort Cummings, platting of the city, railroad, cattle, citrus, and consumption.
Good Ole Days Event
The City partnered with the Lake Alfred Historical Society, Lake Alfred Chamber of Commerce, Lake Alfred Lions Club, and Lake Alfred businesses to accomplish this FINAL Centennial celebration. The event was held on November 7th at the Lions Park. The event featured family friendly events, old-fashioned food and activities, an antique car show and fireworks.
City Manager Leavengood recognized the City Commission, businesses and distinguished citizens for their involvement in the Centennial events throughout the year. Plaques were presented to the Charles Lake, Mayor, Nancy Z. Daley, Vice Mayor, Jack Dearmin, Commissioner, John Duncan, Commissioner, Albertus Maultsby, City Attorney, Seth Claytor, Assistant City Attorney, The Lake Alfred Chamber of Commerce, Historical Society, Friends of the Library, Lions Club, First Baptist Church, CenterState Bank, Judy Schelfo, Betty Shinn, Pastor Mike Jones and City manager Leavengood.
Other were also presented with Centennial Plaques at other meeting s and functions including the the City of Auburndale, TECO, City Management and Department Directors.
Historic Marker Dedications
The Centennial Celebration continues in 2016 with the recognition of historic buildings around the City of Lake Alfred. Following the celebration of the Lake Alfred Centennial, the City of Lake Alfred and Lake Alfred Historical Society have partnered together to recognize historic buildings within the community. Buildings are historically significant to the early settlement and foundations of Lake Alfred. Each dedication ceremony will included a presentation of the history of the building and the unveiling of a historical building marker plaque.
